The pace of his recovery speaks to the mental fortitude and work ethic that his coaches have long recognised — and relied upon.
A habit of delivering at the biggest moments
This pattern is nothing new for Merino. At Euro 2024, it was his header against Germany, in the final minutes of extra-time, that kept Spain alive and set them on course for victory over England in the final. He has made a habit of arriving precisely when his team needs him most.
At club level, the story is no different. Since joining Arsenal from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2024, Merino has evolved into one of Mikel Arteta's most trusted weapons — capable of playing as a midfielder, a centre-forward, or anything in between. He has scored against Liverpool, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Newcastle for the Gunners, and ten of his 11 Premier League goals have either drawn Arsenal level or put them ahead.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, who first worked with Merino in the country's youth setup, was unequivocal about his faith in the player.
