Though Semenyo's performance during the trial was not spectacular, Hockaday noticed his effortless ability to use both feet and read something in the teenager's physical potential that others had missed.

In the weeks that followed, Hockaday tracked down Semenyo's parents and told them he wanted to help their son. They trusted him, and a partnership was born.
