VAR controversy compounds a dramatic derby

The red card was not the only flashpoint in a ferociously contested Manchester derby. Erling Haaland's 60th-minute strike — the match's only goal — was itself mired in controversy after refereeing body Pro Ref admitted to an error that should have kept the goal disallowed.

Haaland's finish was initially ruled out for offside on the pitch, but VAR overturned the decision, determining that Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu had played the striker onside. However, City's Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position as he attempted to play the ball before it reached Haaland.

Although Fernandez did not touch the ball, his movement appeared to interfere with United defender Lisandro Martinez's ability to defend — a situation that, under the laws of the game, should have kept the goal disallowed.

Approximately three hours after the final whistle, Pro Ref issued a statement acknowledging the mistake.
