Cahill Compares Estevao to Hazard and Robben as Chelsea Wonderkid Shines

-6 d·2 min

Gary Cahill has drawn a bold comparison between Chelsea's teenage Brazilian winger Estevao Willian and two of Stamford Bridge's most celebrated former players — Eden Hazard and Arjen Robben — insisting the youngster carries that same rare gift of making fans hold their breath with every touch.

The former Chelsea and England defender described Estevao as the kind of player fans pay to see, capable of conjuring moments of brilliance from nothing in the most demanding situations.

"I've been at the Bridge a few times this season and the fans can't get enough of him. He's one of those players where you can see the fans on the edge of their seat when he picks the ball up, which is what fans pay the money for, to come and see. In my day it was the likes of Hazard, Robben and Pedro, there's Willian, and the list goes on."

Cahill went further, underlining Estevao's ability to unlock stubborn defences at critical moments — a quality that places him in rare company among Chelsea's most thrilling attacking talents across the years.

"It's those players that you're looking for to unlock situations, to create something out of the blue. You're waiting in these big moments, aren't you, for someone to unlock, someone to create something. He's somebody who can certainly produce that. And you look at his age, you'd imagine he's only going to get better and better. So it's exciting for the Chelsea fans."

A stunning Champions League moment

Estevao's defining moment this season arrived on the grandest stage — a UEFA Champions League match against Barcelona. Picking up the ball 25 yards from goal, he drifted past Pau Cubarsí, shrugged off Alejandro Balde, and unleashed a spectacular solo effort into the roof of the net.

The strike encapsulated exactly what Cahill described: a player who creates something extraordinary from a seemingly routine possession.

Hamstring injury cuts season short

Sadly, the season ended prematurely for the young Brazilian. Estevao suffered a serious hamstring tear during an April fixture against Manchester United, ending his domestic campaign ahead of schedule and, more painfully, ruling him out of representing Brazil at the FIFA World Cup 2026. He is currently in rehabilitation.

Despite the setback, Cahill remained optimistic about the teenager's long-term future. "It's just a shame that he's taken a bit of an injury, but that's part and parcel of the game. He is certainly a huge talent," he added.
