Thousands of supporters packed Praia International Airport on Sunday, waving flags and holding banners, as Cape Verde's Blue Sharks arrived home from a historic FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign that captivated football fans across the globe.

The Blue Sharks made their maiden World Cup appearance one to remember, reaching the Round of 16 before bowing out 3-2 in extra time against defending champions Argentina — a narrow defeat that did little to dim the euphoria greeting the squad's return.

A street parade through the capital, Praia, was scheduled for the team, who were also set to be received by President José Maria Neves and other senior government officials.

A nation captivated the world

Cape Verde became one of the stories of the tournament, advancing to the knockout stages on their World Cup debut and earning widespread praise for their bold, fearless approach against some of the sport's most powerful nations.

Their extraordinary run came to an end in Miami, where Lionel Scaloni's Argentina side required the full 120 minutes to see off the Blue Sharks in a gripping 3-2 contest.

The homecoming carried additional significance: Sunday also marked Cape Verde's Independence Day, as the island nation of around 500,000 people celebrated the 51st anniversary of its independence from Portugal, making the occasion doubly historic.

Bubista pays tribute to his players

Head coach Bubista was defiant and proud as he addressed the gathered crowd following the team's arrival.
