Ederson Called Up as Wesley's World Cup Dream Ends With Injury

Brazil have suffered a blow ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after full-back Wesley was ruled out with a thigh injury, with midfielder Ederson — set to join Manchester United from Atalanta for £35 million — named as his replacement.
Wesley, who plays his club football for Roma, lasted just 15 minutes of Brazil's final warm-up match against Egypt before leaving the field in tears. Brazil went on to win that match 2-1 in what proved a bittersweet evening for the squad.
A subsequent MRI scan confirmed the worst for the 22-year-old. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed the diagnosis in a statement, revealing a muscle injury to the adductor in his left thigh.
"The CBF regrets the injury. Wesley is a player much loved by the squad and will always be considered part of this team as it seeks to win its sixth World Cup title."
Ederson, 26, earned the last of his three international caps in March 2025. He is expected to travel to the United States on Monday to link up with the Brazil squad, with his transfer from Atalanta to Manchester United anticipated to be finalised in early July.
Brazil's group stage schedule
Carlo Ancelotti's side open their Group C campaign against Morocco on Saturday in New York, before taking on Haiti in Philadelphia on 19 June and Scotland in Miami on 24 June.
Match report: Brazil 2-1 Egypt
Brazil's preparation win over Egypt was played at the home stadium of the Cleveland Browns NFL team. The hosts took the lead after only seven minutes when Bruno Guimaraes — the Newcastle United midfielder — robbed Mohanad Lashin near Egypt's penalty area and slotted a low finish past goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir.
Egypt levelled just four minutes later. Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos played an underhit backpass that gifted possession to Mostafa Zico, who drilled a crisp finish into the bottom corner past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.
The decisive goal arrived after the interval, during which Ancelotti introduced eight changes. Real Madrid teenager Endrick, 19, swept home a low cutback from Raphinha to put Brazil back in front and seal the result.
Ancelotti described himself as "satisfied" following the victory, which came a week after Brazil demolished Panama 6-2 in Rio de Janeiro.
"I think the team played well, played with intensity, with rhythm, with good organisation, a lot of intensity in the pressing," the Italian said.
Elsewhere in Group C, Haiti fell 2-1 to Peru in their warm-up fixture, while Morocco are due to face Norway on Sunday evening to round off their preparations.
