Iwobi on the Verge of 100th Super Eagles Cap Ahead of Portugal Friendly

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi is preparing to write his name deeper into Nigeria's history books, with his 100th cap for the Super Eagles expected to arrive on Wednesday in an international friendly against Portugal in Leiria.

The 29-year-old will join a small group of players to have reached the century mark for Nigeria — a remarkable testament to his decade-long commitment to the green-and-white.

"I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white. I am grateful to everyone, including the coach who called me up to the team for the first time. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria," Iwobi told thenff.com.

A journey that began in Belgium

Iwobi made his international debut for Nigeria in a friendly against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Visé, Belgium, on 8 October 2015 — a moment he recalls with warmth and clarity.

Having previously represented England at youth level, the former Everton player said the decision to commit to Nigeria felt natural, shaped in part by guidance from his father.

"I first went to the Nigeria U23 team camp and felt at home. My father always told me to go out there and enjoy my football, and make the decision that I felt was good for me. He was part of the decision but he didn't force it down on me," he said.

Looking back over ten years and eight months of international football, Iwobi remains grounded about his legacy.

"I won't say I am a legend; I only see myself as a Super Eagles' player. It feels great to be looking at a 100th cap, and on a lighter note, I wish I can add another 100 caps. I have enjoyed my time with the Super Eagles."

The goal he will never forget

When asked to identify his most cherished moment in a Nigeria shirt, Iwobi points without hesitation to his goal against Zambia's Chipolopolo at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in October 2017 — a strike that sent the Super Eagles to the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals.

"I loved the occasion because my dad and my mum were both at the stadium and saw it all, and we celebrated together afterwards. It was an exciting moment."

He acknowledges that the Africa Cup of Nations title and a place at the upcoming FIFA World Cup remain ambitions unfulfilled, but insists there are no regrets.

A proud family milestone

Iwobi's father, Chuka, has spoken of the family's deep gratitude for the journey his son has taken in a Nigeria shirt.

"When he made his debut in 2015, little did we know that this was the beginning of an amazing and incredible journey which would lead to him achieving the milestone of a hundred caps and with the potential of many more caps to come," Chuka said.

Chuka added that no one could question his son's commitment to the national cause, pointing to the highs and lows Iwobi has navigated over the years as evidence of a character that has only grown stronger with experience.

"Alex loves playing for the nation and always gives his best. There have been highs and lows over the years but he has emerged stronger from the experience. We pray that he continues to excel and that the Super Eagles are able to repay the fans for their love and support."
