Mourinho Confirmed as Real Madrid Head Coach After Perez Re-Election

-4 d·1 min

Jose Mourinho is set to be officially confirmed as Real Madrid's new head coach after Florentino Perez secured re-election as club president, a position he will hold until 2030.

Mourinho, 63, had already put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Real last month, but the agreement was contingent on Perez retaining the presidency. With that condition now fulfilled, the appointment can proceed.

Perez, 79, claimed 65 percent of the vote — recording 21,741 votes against challenger Enrique Riquelme's 11,814 — to extend a tenure that began in 2009. The election, announced at an extraordinary news conference last month, was the first Real Madrid presidential contest in 20 years to feature a rival candidate, with renewable energy magnate Riquelme opting to stand.
