Ogbene Rescues Republic of Ireland Draw Against World Cup Co-Hosts Canada

-6 d·2 min

Chiedozie Ogbene struck to earn the Republic of Ireland a 1-1 draw against FIFA World Cup 2026 co-hosts Canada in a friendly played in Montreal on Saturday.

Canada broke the deadlock in the 24th minute through an unfortunate own goal. Defender Jake O'Brien, attempting to clear a corner from Stephen Eustaquio, headed the ball into his own net to hand the hosts an early lead.

Ireland were given a route back into the match when Cyle Larin — who had earlier in the day signed a two-year deal with Southampton — fouled Jamie McGrath inside the box. Referee pointed to the spot, but Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau denied Troy Parrott's penalty.

Ogbene, however, was sharp to react and slammed home the rebound in the 60th minute, levelling the match and extending Ireland's encouraging run of recent form.

Ireland go close but Crepeau stands firm

The Republic of Ireland, who did not qualify for this summer's World Cup, pushed for a winner late in the game. Substitute Mason Melia burst forward with intent, only for Crepeau to produce another strong stop and preserve the point for Canada.

Crepeau, who plays for Orlando City, famously missed the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after suffering a broken leg in the MLS Cup final that year.

Canada's World Cup preparations take shape

Canada, managed by former Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch, are building towards the FIFA World Cup 2026 opener on June 12 in Toronto, where they face Bosnia and Herzegovina on the tournament's opening night. They then take on Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.

One major concern for Marsch remains the fitness of captain Alphonso Davies, who has yet to recover from the hamstring injury he picked up while on duty with Bayern Munich. Davies' absence continues to cast a shadow over Canada's preparations ahead of their home tournament.
