Timber Ruled Out of World Cup as Netherlands Call Up Geertruida

-4 d·1 min

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has been ruled out of the Netherlands' World Cup campaign after failing to recover sufficiently from a groin injury, with Lutsharel Geertruida called up as his replacement.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed on Monday that Timber, 24, had not recovered to a level that would allow him to participate in the tournament in a "medically responsible manner." The association added that Timber would depart the national team's pre-camp in New York following their friendly against Uzbekistan.

Timber had been sidelined since mid-March with the groin problem but made a brief return from the bench in the Champions League final in Budapest on 30 May, coming on as a 66th-minute substitute against Paris St-Germain. That cameo was his first appearance since a 2-0 win over Everton on 14 March.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had stated ahead of the Budapest final that Timber was "fit" to play, making the tournament withdrawal all the more surprising.

The 24-year-old has earned 23 caps for the Netherlands since his international debut in June 2021.

Stepping in for Timber is Geertruida, 25, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman moved swiftly to secure the full-back's availability ahead of the tournament.

The Netherlands open Group F on 14 June against Japan, before facing Sweden and Tunisia in their remaining group-stage fixtures.
