A small club in the north of England has quietly produced three of the country's most important footballers ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Carlisle United, based in Cumbria, can claim a meaningful role in the development of all three of England's World Cup goalkeepers — Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, and James Trafford.

Pickford's defining moment in Cumbria

Pickford arrived at Carlisle on loan from Sunderland as a 19-year-old, playing 18 games for the then-League One club. He is now England's first-choice goalkeeper under manager Thomas Tuchel, with 85 caps to his name at the age of 32.

Goalkeeping coach Ben Benson remembers a trip to Deepdale that revealed Pickford's character. Away to Preston, Pickford fumbled a cross and Lee Holmes tucked home a loose ball to make it 3-1 — part of a 6-1 defeat for Carlisle. What followed told Benson everything he needed to know.
