William Troost-Ekong, the former Super Eagles captain, has lavished praise on Lionel Messi following the Argentine icon's commanding two-goal display against Austria at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Messi struck late in the first half at the venue in Texas, converting a characteristic left-footed finish after slick build-up play from Argentina. The goal brought his overall World Cup tally to 17 — adding to the hat-trick he notched in Argentina's tournament opener.
The 38-year-old then wrapped up the result deep into injury time, poking the ball home after a goalmouth scramble in which he outwitted four defenders desperate to keep the ball out.
A player of different quality
Speaking as a guest on SuperSport's World Cup 2026 coverage after the final whistle, Troost-Ekong described Messi as simply unstoppable.
