Thomas Tuchel's England side enter their final FIFA World Cup 2026 group L fixture against Panama needing little more than a point to confirm their knockout-stage berth, with Nico O'Reilly and Marcus Rashford pushing for places in the starting eleven.

Two wins, one frustrating draw

England opened the tournament in dominant fashion, beating Croatia 4-2 before a clinical 3-0 win over Costa Rica further underlined their attacking depth. However, a stubborn Ghana side held Tuchel's men to a 0-0 draw, exposing lingering questions about England's ability to break down a low defensive block in the stifling heat and humidity of North America.

Despite that setback, England remain on course for the last 16. Panama — ranked more than 20 places above Ghana in the FIFA World Rankings — will provide a sterner examination than the scoreline might suggest, and Tuchel has spoken clearly about the need for a convincing performance rather than mere qualification.

Tuchel's tactical fingerprints

The German head coach, appointed by the FA from January 2025, arrived carrying a Champions League winner's medal from his time at Chelsea and an expectation that he could finally deliver a major trophy for the Three Lions. His most significant tactical call to date has been handing Elliot Anderson the role of midfield anchor. The Nottingham Forest man, who made his international debut in a 2-0 win over Andorra in September 2025, has formed a productive partnership alongside Declan Rice, giving Rice the freedom to push forward and impose himself on games.

Tuchel also resolved the long-running debate over England's No.10 position — a battle between Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Cole Palmer — by turning to Morgan Rogers. Initially a decision shaped by injury circumstances, it has come to look like an inspired one, with the Aston Villa midfielder appearing set to retain the shirt heading into the Panama clash.

A flawless road to the tournament

England's World Cup qualifying campaign was remarkable by any measure: eight wins from eight matches, 22 goals scored, and none conceded. That defensive record made them the only qualifier to reach the USA, Mexico, and Canada without shipping a single goal — a statistic all the more striking given that their back line is widely regarded as their least reliable unit.

Jordan Pickford, now at his fifth major tournament at the age of 32, remains Tuchel's first-choice goalkeeper. Jordan Henderson, meanwhile, makes history in this squad, representing England at a seventh international tournament.

Squad depth and notable absences

The 26-man group contains several players at their first senior tournament, including Dan Burn, Noni Madueke, and Jarell Quansah. Ivan Toney was a surprise selection at forward, while Trevoh Chalobah earned a late call-up after replacing the injured Tino Livramento.

Notable absentees include Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw, Lewis Hall, Harry Maguire, Adam Wharton, Jarrod Bowen, Conor Gallagher, and Levi Colwill.
