Before a single ball was kicked at Boston Stadium in Massachusetts, the FIFA World Cup 2026™ had already delivered one of its most memorable moments — a stadium of more than 60,000 voices singing as one.
The occasion was Scotland's 1-0 victory over Haiti, but the story before kick-off was just as compelling as the result itself, thanks to FIFA's bold new pre-match ceremony protocol.
A new vision for the world's biggest stage
FIFA has introduced a '360-degree' ceremony concept for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, designed to draw supporters deeper into the fabric of the occasion. Country-flag banners and on-pitch elements are arranged to create an immersive, all-encompassing atmosphere.
The most striking change sees the starting XI and substitutes stand together in the centre circle, gathered around a banner bearing the words Football Unites the World, as national anthems play. No player is left on the sideline — every squad member is part of the moment.
Scotland's Flower of Scotland echoes around Boston
For Scotland, returning to the FIFA World Cup™ for the first time in 28 years, the emotion inside Boston Stadium was electric. The Tartan Army belted out Flower of Scotland with unmistakable passion — and rock legend Rod Stewart was among those in the stands.
