Uzbekistan's Ilgiz Tantashev will take charge of the round of 16 showdown between Paraguay and France at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, July 4 — a venue carrying extra symbolism as the city marks the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

The stakes could not be higher: the winners advance to the quarter-finals, where they will meet the victors of Canada vs Morocco. That winner, in turn, awaits one of Portugal, Spain, the United States, or Belgium in the last eight.

A referee making his World Cup mark

Tantashev, 42, is officiating at his first FIFA World Cup. He arrives at this stage with experience from the Asian Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics, though his Olympic campaign ended prematurely after he collided with Spain's Marc Pubill and had to be withdrawn from semi-final duty.
