Nine adults were wounded in a shooting near England's World Cup base in Kansas City, Missouri, in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to a report by The Athletic.

Officers from the Kansas City Police Department responded to calls about gunfire on Troost Avenue — a short drive from England's designated training base and not far from the team hotel the squad will occupy during the tournament. Captain Jake Becchina confirmed that police arrived to find a large crowd already dispersing. Initially, three adult women were identified as having been taken to hospital.

It later emerged that a total of nine adults had independently made their way to various local hospitals, all with non-life threatening injuries. No suspects have been arrested, though officers continue to patrol the area.

Security funding already in place

The shooting comes just two days after the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners approved a $17 million federal grant earmarked for World Cup security and safety, as reported by KCTV5.

KCPD Deputy Chief Derek McCollum spoke to the planning effort ahead of the tournament. "We knew we needed the funding, so we kept moving forward with the planning," he said. "We figured eventually that funding source would come through."

England yet to arrive in Kansas City

England's players and staff are not yet in Missouri. The squad is currently in Palm Beach, Florida, completing their pre-tournament preparations. On Saturday, they defeated New Zealand 1-0 in a warm-up fixture in Tampa, with a second friendly against Costa Rica scheduled at the Inter&Co; Stadium in Orlando on Wednesday.

England are due to fly to Kansas City on Saturday, June 13, where they will remain for the rest of the tournament. The squad will train at Swope Soccer Village — the home of Sporting KC's reserve team and academy — on the south-east edge of the city.

England are not alone in being based in Kansas City. Argentina, the reigning World Cup holders, will use Sporting KC's main training facility, while Netherlands will train at the home ground of NWSL club Kansas City Current.
