Omar Artan Denied US Entry, Dropped From FIFA World Cup 2026

FIFA has confirmed that Somali referee Omar Artan will not officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry into the United States, ending his historic bid to become the first Somali referee at a World Cup.

Artan, who was named CAF's referee of the year in 2025, was turned away at Miami International Airport and forced to return to Istanbul. He had believed his visa was valid to work in the US despite Somalia being among the countries on the US travel ban list.

FIFA's response

A FIFA spokesman issued a statement confirming the decision was beyond the federation's control. "FIFA can confirm that match official Omar Abdulkadir Artan will be unable to train and officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry into the United States," the statement read.

"FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan's status will not be changed at present."

FIFA also noted that responsibility for border decisions rests with the host nation, adding: "In line with previous FIFA events, a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country."

A major blow for African officiating

Artan had been recognised as the continent's finest referee, earning CAF's top officiating honour in 2025 — making his exclusion a significant loss for African representation at the tournament. His absence denies Africa one of its most celebrated officials on the grandest stage in football.

FIFA has not announced a replacement. More details are expected to follow.
