Real Madrid Enter Race for Julian Alvarez, Dealing Arsenal a Transfer Blow

Real Madrid have entered the battle to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, intensifying a transfer race that already features Arsenal and Barcelona ahead of the summer window.

Madrid rivals clash over Alvarez

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Patrick Berger, Real Madrid have made formal enquiries about the Argentina international and rate him highly. Berger also relayed that Atletico Madrid would consider selling Alvarez if a bid of €150 million were placed on the table.

The development is a significant blow for Arsenal, who had been among the frontrunners to land the 26-year-old forward. Barcelona are also understood to have registered their interest, with reports suggesting they previously tabled an offer in the region of £77.9 million — a figure that reportedly angered Atletico Madrid's hierarchy.

Atletico responded to the reported Barcelona bid with a sardonic post on X, offering "four tickets for tomorrow's Bad Bunny concert, an annual subscription to ABC, and a bag of sunflower seeds" in exchange for Lamine Yamal — a pointed jab at their Catalan rivals.

A formidable release clause looms

Any club chasing Alvarez faces a towering obstacle: a reported release clause of €500 million in his contract. That figure is expected to complicate negotiations considerably, regardless of which club ultimately leads the pursuit.

Real Madrid's motivation, per the report in SPORT, is as much about blocking Barcelona as it is about reinforcing their own attack. The Spanish giants are determined to prevent their rivals from landing one of La Liga's most effective forwards.

Alvarez's outstanding season

Alvarez ended the 2024-25 campaign in commanding form, scoring 20 goals and contributing nine assists for Atletico Madrid. The club finished fourth in La Liga, reached the Copa del Rey final, and advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals — a run in which Alvarez played a central role.

The former Manchester City forward is currently on international duty with Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where La Albiceleste are bidding to retain the trophy they claimed in Qatar four years ago.
