Real Madrid have opened lines of communication with Arsenal regarding the potential signing of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori this summer, according to reports from Sky Sport Italia.

Representatives from the Spanish giants have reached out to their Arsenal counterparts to gauge Calafiori's availability, though the contact remains at an early, exploratory stage — no formal negotiations have taken place.

Mourinho's return drives the push

The move is understood to be driven in part by José Mourinho, who is reported to have identified Calafiori as a key target should he return to the Bernabeu dugout. The Special One is expected to be confirmed as Real Madrid's next head coach following the re-election of club president Florentino Perez, with a deal to appoint him said to be in its final stages.

Spanish reports had earlier claimed that Mourinho specifically requested the signing of Calafiori as a condition of his return, and Madrid appear to be following through on that request.

Dumfries deal also in the pipeline

Real Madrid are not limiting their summer recruitment to Calafiori alone. The club are also set to bring in Netherlands right wing-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter, with the Dutch international expected to leave the Nerazzurri for a fee of approximately €20 million. A release clause in Dumfries's contract reportedly became active earlier this month, paving the way for the transfer.

The moves signal Real Madrid's intent to bolster their defensive options significantly ahead of the new season, with both a centre-back and a wing-back high on the agenda.
