Behind every FIFA World Cup 2026 pre-match ceremony stands an invisible army of volunteers who ensure the spectacle unfolds without a hitch. In Vancouver, around 2,500 dedicated volunteers are helping deliver the tournament — and among them, one father-daughter pair stood out for all the right reasons.
Christina and Andy Basi have been named Vancouver's FIFA World Cup 2026 Unsung Heroes, a recognition that arrived as a complete surprise — and was delivered by none other than Alphonso Davies himself.
Christina's remarkable journey
Twenty-five years ago, a 16-year-old Christina suffered a brain injury that left her paralysed on the left side of her body. Through sheer determination, she relearned to walk and regained movement in her left arm — only for a second brain bleed to erase that progress entirely.
After multiple surgeries and years of rehabilitation, Christina once again recovered the ability to walk. Her left arm remains slower to respond, but she has refused to let that define her limits. With her father Andy at her side, she has continued to chase her passion for football through volunteering.
