A turbulent season before the fairytale ending
The campaign itself was far from straightforward. Glasner clashed with the club over the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in a deal worth approximately £67 million. He also intervened personally on transfer deadline day to block the departure of captain Marc Guehi to Liverpool after a move for a replacement — Brighton's Igor Julio — collapsed.
Palace endured a 12-game winless run across all competitions between December and January, tumbling from the Champions League places toward the relegation zone. They also failed to qualify automatically for the Conference League knockout stage, dropping into the play-offs. The nadir came in early January when, as FA Cup holders, they were eliminated by non-league Macclesfield in the biggest upset in the competition's history.
