Adepoju: Golden Eaglets Missing 2027 U-17 AFCON Is Shocking and Painful

Mutiu Adepoju, the former Super Eagles forward, has voiced deep shock at Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting that such an outcome is almost inconceivable given the Golden Eaglets' distinguished history on the continent.

The 2027 U-17 AFCON is scheduled for Morocco between April and May 2027. Because Nigeria did not qualify, the Golden Eaglets will also miss the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar — a tournament that will feature 48 nations across what Qatar is set to host as three consecutive editions: 2025, 2027, and 2029.

A record of excellence now under threat

Adepoju, 55, who earned the nickname 'Headmaster' during his playing career, pointed to Nigeria's extraordinary youth football pedigree to underline why this absence stings so sharply. The Golden Eaglets have won the U-17 AFCON twice — in 2001 and 2007 — and have claimed the FIFA U-17 World Cup a record five times, in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013, and 2015.
