African Giants on the Brink as Underdogs Chase Historic CAF Champions League Spots

The TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2026/27 reaches a pivotal weekend, with some of Africa's most storied clubs staring down the threat of early elimination while ambitious outsiders stand on the verge of historic qualification.

Fifteen Second Preliminary Round second-leg fixtures are scheduled between Friday, 23 October and Sunday, 25 October 2026, and the outcomes will determine which 15 clubs join Tanzania's Young Africans in the 16-team group stage — set to kick off at the end of November.

Young Africans blaze the trail

Young Africans became the first club to seal group-stage qualification after dismantling Madagascar's CFFA 4-1 on Wednesday to complete an 8-1 aggregate rout. Their place is secured; the remaining 15 are still fiercely contested.

Heavyweights under threat

Four-time African champions Espérance Sportive de Tunis find themselves in a precarious position, needing to overturn a 1-0 first-leg defeat when they host Libya's Swehly SC in Tunis on Saturday. Swehly are 90 minutes away from one of the most remarkable results in their continental history.

Algeria's MC Alger face an even steeper climb, welcoming Nigeria's Rangers International on Friday with a 2-0 deficit to claw back. Angola's Petro Atlético are in an identical situation, hosting Zimbabwe's Scottland FC after also losing 2-0 in the first leg.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns must avoid complacency when they receive Angola's Wiliete de Benguela in Pretoria on Friday. The South African giants were held to a 0-0 draw in the first leg and cannot afford another stalemate.

Five-time winners TP Mazembe travel to Tunisia to face Club Africain on Sunday, with the sides level at 1-1 from the first leg in Lubumbashi. Either club can advance, making this one of the most evenly poised ties of the round.

Clubs in control

Not all the pressure falls on the established names. Morocco's RS Berkane carry a 2-0 lead into Saturday's home match against Sierra Leone's Star Sport Academy, while Egypt's Pyramids FC and Zamalek SC will both look to close out their respective campaigns at home on Saturday after recording 1-0 away victories against South Sudan's El Merriekh Bentiu and Rwanda's APR FC.

South Africa's Orlando Pirates, who beat Namibia's African Stars 1-0 away, need a composed performance in Friday's return to book their spot. Sudan's Al Hilal Omdurman protect a 2-0 lead against Ethiopia's Sidama Bunna on Sunday, while Tanzania's Simba SC — fresh from a stunning 6-1 away win over Equatorial Guinea's 15 de Agosto — are firm favourites to join compatriots Young Africans in the group stage when they host the return on Sunday.

Cameroon's Colombe Sportive also hold a commanding 2-0 advantage after winning away at Senegal's Teungueth FC, putting them in a strong position ahead of Sunday's home second leg.

Ties on a knife-edge

Several other encounters remain wide open. Côte d'Ivoire's ASEC Mimosas host Morocco's MAS de Fès on Sunday after a 1-1 first-leg draw, while Guinea's Horoya AC travel to Sudan to face Al Merriekh holding only a 1-0 lead. Mauritania's FC Nouadhibou face the toughest task of the clubs needing to recover ground, requiring a turnaround against Côte d'Ivoire's FC San Pedro after losing the first leg 2-1.

With margins so fine across the bracket, the stage is set for a weekend of high drama — and potentially further upsets — as clubs across the continent battle for a place among Africa's continental elite.
