Austria captain David Alaba has been cleared to travel to the United States for the World Cup despite picking up a muscle injury during Monday's friendly, while midfielder Christoph Baumgartner has been ruled out of the tournament entirely.
Alaba, the former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid defender, was withdrawn at half-time of Austria's 1-0 win over Tunisia but was subsequently passed fit to join the squad on their trip to America.
There is far less encouraging news for Baumgartner, however. The RB Leipzig midfielder sustained a thigh muscle injury during the pre-match warm-up on Monday and will play no part in the World Cup, Austria's football association confirmed on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old had one of the standout individual seasons in Germany, contributing 17 goals and nine assists across all competitions for the Bundesliga club. His absence is a significant blow to Austria's attacking options.
