Algeria Stage Second-Half Comeback to Beat Jordan at FIFA World Cup 2026

Algeria fought back from a goal down to beat Jordan 2-1 in San Francisco on Monday, claiming their first victory at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with two second-half goals in a dramatic turnaround.
Jordan strike against the run of play
The Desert Foxes dominated the opening period, creating a string of chances. Amine Gouiri went close as early as the 3rd minute, sending a shot narrowly wide, and captain Riyad Mahrez squandered a one-on-one opportunity midway through the half when a defender recovered to deny him.
Algeria's pressure failed to produce a goal, and Jordan punished them six minutes before the break. Mousa Al-Taamari launched a well-worked move and picked out Nizar Al-Rashdan, who swept a composed low finish into the bottom corner to give Jordan a 1-0 lead heading into the interval.
Substitute Ben Bouali levels for Algeria
Algeria came out with renewed intent in the second half. Mahrez's free-kick in the 51st minute forced Yazeed Abulaila into a punch clear, and the goalkeeper then produced another excellent save to deny Ibrahim Maza moments later.
The pressure told in the 66th minute. Mahrez delivered a corner and substitute Nadhir Ben Bouali rose above the defence to head home the equaliser, bringing Algeria level.
Gouiri completes the turnaround
Algeria refused to settle for a draw, and their winner arrived in the 82nd minute. Another corner caused chaos in Jordan's area, and Gouiri reacted to a loose ball inside the box to fire home from close range and complete the comeback.
The result gives Algeria three points following their opening defeat to Argentina, keeping their hopes of reaching the Round of 16 alive. A decisive final group-stage match against Austria now awaits.
