Amad Diallo Strikes Late to Give Côte d'Ivoire a Dramatic World Cup Opening Win

2 hours ago·3 min

Côte d'Ivoire began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ecuador in Philadelphia on Sunday, sealed by a moment of brilliance from substitute Amad Diallo deep into stoppage time.

The Group E match looked destined for a goalless draw until Amad, introduced from the bench to inject fresh attacking energy, guided a composed left-footed finish into the bottom corner in the 90th minute to send the Ivorian supporters into raptures.

The victory lifted Côte d'Ivoire level on points with Germany at the summit of Group E — a statement result that sets up a mouthwatering showdown between the two sides in the coming round.

Ecuador on top for much of the contest

For long stretches of the evening, Ecuador were the more dangerous side. The South Americans pressed with intent from the opening whistle, with Moisés Caicedo, Enner Valencia, John Yeboah, and Alan Minda causing repeated problems for the Ivorian defence.

Yeboah came closest to breaking the deadlock when his ferocious long-range effort crashed against the crossbar, with goalkeeper Yahia Fofana well beaten. Minutes later, Pedro Vite slipped a clever pass through for Minda, whose curling shot struck the woodwork for a second time — a sign of Ecuador's growing frustration.

Fofana, however, remained composed and commanding throughout, marshalling a disciplined defensive line that refused to buckle despite the sustained Ecuadorian pressure.

History made by a teenager

One of the brightest sparks for Côte d'Ivoire was 19-year-old Yan Diomande, who made history as the first Ivorian teenager to feature in a FIFA World Cup match. The youngster stretched Ecuador's defence repeatedly with his pace and directness down the flank, offering his side a consistent attacking outlet.

Bazoumana Touré also tested Hernán Galíndez with a low driven effort before half-time, but neither side could manufacture the breakthrough before the interval.

Woodwork denies both sides again

The second half mirrored the first in its intensity. Valencia rattled the post from a tight angle, while Elye Wahi connected sweetly with a first-time effort that struck the crossbar at the other end — ensuring the woodwork played a starring role throughout the evening.

As the clock wound down, Côte d'Ivoire seized control of possession and pushed Ecuador progressively deeper, sensing that the winning goal was within reach.

Amad delivers the decisive moment

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 90th minute. Wilfried Singo surged forward on the right flank and whipped a dangerous ball into the penalty area. Amad, timing his run with precision, met it with a clean left-footed strike that nestled into the bottom corner beyond Galíndez's reach.

Ecuador threw everything forward in search of a leveller but were unable to fashion a clear chance before the final whistle. They will reflect on a performance full of moments that deserved more — yet that is the fine margin of a World Cup group stage.

For Côte d'Ivoire, the victory was a tribute to resilience and patience. The Elephants now look ahead to their Group E clash with Germany — brimming with confidence and proof that, on the biggest stage, they possess players capable of producing the extraordinary.
