Ancelotti Confirms Neymar Will Miss Brazil's World Cup Opener Against Morocco

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar will not feature in Brazil's opening FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match against Morocco at the MetLife Stadium, with the veteran forward currently managing an injury that has kept him away from the training pitch.
The 34-year-old was a somewhat unexpected inclusion in Ancelotti's squad — particularly with other attacking options such as Richarlison and Joao Pedro left out of Brazil's summer selection. Despite his absence from international football since 2023, Neymar earned his call-up on the strength of his experience and his influence within the dressing room.
Neymar's return timeline
Ancelotti told reporters that the forward is working hard to get back to full fitness as soon as possible. "Neymar is working very hard to recover as quickly as possible," the Brazil head coach said. "The expectation is that he will recover and rejoin the group next week."
With Neymar only expected to return to group training next week, his availability for Brazil's second Group C fixture — against Haiti on Saturday, 20 June — remains uncertain. The earliest realistic opportunity for him to feature could be the group-stage finale against Scotland on 24 June.
More than just minutes on the pitch
Ancelotti was careful to underline that Neymar's contribution to this Brazil squad extends well beyond what he offers during 90 minutes of football. "When we call up Neymar, we call him not only for his technical quality, which is indisputable, but also for his experience and the example he can set for the young players in this group," the coach explained.
Neymar has scored 79 goals for Brazil across his international career — a record that speaks for itself. Whether he ultimately plays a significant role on the pitch at FIFA World Cup 2026 or not, Ancelotti clearly views his presence as a stabilising force as the Seleção pursue a sixth world title.
