Argentina Stun Egypt With Stunning Comeback in World Cup Round of 16 Classic

1 hour ago·2 min

Argentina are through to the World Cup quarter-finals after one of the most extraordinary comebacks in tournament history, recovering from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 in stoppage-time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, before a crowd of 68,239.

Enzo Fernandez delivered the decisive blow with a magnificent header in the 90+2' — completing a turnaround that had seemed impossible for most of the evening. Argentina's journey back began only in the 79th minute, when Cristian Romero headed in from a Lionel Messi cross, before Messi himself rifled in a half-volley to level at 2-2 in the 83rd minute.

Egypt's brilliant first half

Egypt controlled long stretches of this match and looked every bit capable of ending the holders' reign. Yasser Ibrahim headed them into the lead in the 15th minute, and the sense of shock inside the stadium deepened when Messi — Argentina's talisman — squandered a penalty in the 21st minute, unable to beat Mostafa Shobeir from the spot.

That miss proved costly in the moment. Egypt held firm, and when Zico doubled the lead in the 67th minute — beating Lisandro Martinez to the ball — the Pharaohs appeared to have eliminated the defending champions. Egypt had also seen a Zico effort rightly disallowed in the 59th minute for a foul on Martinez in the build-up, a moment of controversy that would later be echoed at the other end.

Messi conjures the impossible

What followed defied logic. A Messi who had looked short of his best — carrying the weight of a second penalty miss at this World Cup — summoned something extraordinary. His assist set up Romero's header, and moments later he lashed the ball beyond Shobeir to drag Argentina level. The stadium erupted, and Messi was in tears when he celebrated.

With Egypt reeling, Fernandez met a Lautaro Martinez cross to head home the winner deep into stoppage-time and send Argentina into the last eight. Egypt protested that Lisandro Martinez had fouled Mohamed Salah seconds before the cross, but the goal stood and there was no reprieve for the Pharaohs.

A escape fuelled by pure emotion

Argentina have now shown, once again, that this team — driven by an almost supernatural collective will — simply refuse to accept defeat. The holders were two goals down with little over ten minutes remaining and somehow found a way. With potentially three more matches to play in this tournament, questions will continue to be asked of how far Messi and company can go on pure emotion alone — but for now, Argentina march on.
