Arsenal Make 27-Year History in Leeds Comeback Victory

51 minutes ago·2 min

Arsenal returned to winning ways with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Leeds at the Emirates, a result that also carried a slice of football history.

Leeds went ahead early in the second half through James Justin, and for a period it looked as though Mikel Arteta's side were heading for back-to-back Premier League defeats. Riccardo Calafiori changed the mood at the Emirates, stabbing home from close range to level the scores.

Substitute Bruno Guimaraes then completed the turnaround in the 70th minute, finishing off a superb team move to hand Arsenal all three points and provisionally draw them level with leaders Manchester City at the summit of the table.

Six Englishmen in the starting XI for the first time in 27 years

Beyond the three points, Saturday's match carried a significant historical footnote. Arteta selected six English outfield players in his starting lineup — the first time Arsenal had done so in a Premier League fixture since a game against Manchester United in February 1999, according to talkSPORT.

Ben White, Ezri Konsa, and Myles Lewis-Skelly all started at the back, while Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Noni Madueke completed the English contingent in the XI.

The last Arsenal starting lineup to feature six Englishmen included the likes of Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Steve Bould, Tony Adams, Ray Parlour, and Stephen Hughes — a combination that evokes a very different era at the club.

The perfect response to Brighton

The victory came as a pointed reply to the 3-1 defeat Arsenal suffered at Brighton's Amex Stadium before the international break — a result that left the Gunners stewing for three weeks. Leeds, unbeaten in the league coming into the match, looked capable of compounding Arsenal's misery before the comeback unfolded.

For Leeds manager Daniel Farke, the loss extended a painful streak against north London opposition. His side have now gone without a victory over Arsenal since 2003.
