Arsenal are preparing to submit an improved bid for Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa after the England international signalled to Villa that he wants to join the Premier League champions, according to TEAMtalk.
Konsa, 28, has long been a target at the Emirates Stadium, with his standout World Cup campaign further convincing Arsenal's hierarchy that he would strengthen Mikel Arteta's defensive options. The club began exploring their defensive market in July, following a back injury to William Saliba that highlighted the need for cover both centrally and at right-back.
A rising offer, a firm valuation
Arsenal's opening bid of £40 million was turned down by Aston Villa, who have set their asking price at around £60 million. The Gunners are now willing to return with a revised proposal in excess of £50 million when add-ons are factored in — a figure that sources close to both parties consider sufficient to push the transfer forward.
Konsa himself has made his intentions known. TEAMtalk understands the defender has communicated his desire to leave Villa and regards a move to Arsenal as a compelling step forward in his career.
Other options explored and set aside
Before settling on Konsa as their primary target, Arsenal considered several alternatives. A move for John Stones was assessed but ultimately abandoned after the club declined to match the long-term contract he later signed with Inter Milan. Enquiries for Atletico Madrid's Marc Pubill were also made in recent weeks, though those approaches were rejected.
Villa's position and their own transfer activity
Aston Villa are conscious of Konsa's desire to move on and are simultaneously pursuing reinforcements of their own. The club are close to completing the signing of Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid and have made contact regarding West Ham's Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Villa's room for manoeuvre is constrained by financial pressures. With Konsa entering the final two years of his contract, the club may find it increasingly difficult to hold out if Arsenal meet their valuation. Both sides appear to be edging toward an agreement that could see one of England's most consistent centre-backs swap the Midlands for north London.
