Arsenal Set to Sell Martinelli in Summer Rebuild

last week·2 min

Arsenal are preparing to part ways with Gabriel Martinelli this summer, ending a six-year chapter at the club, according to talkSPORT.

Manager Mikel Arteta is plotting a significant squad overhaul as he targets consecutive Premier League titles, and one casualty of those plans could be the Brazilian forward.

Rogers pursuit shapes Martinelli's exit

Aston Villa winger Morgan Rogers has emerged as a priority target for Arteta heading into the transfer window. With Rogers in mind, Arsenal are expected to move on from either Martinelli or Leandro Trossard — and Martinelli appears the more likely to leave.

The 23-year-old found himself on the fringes of Arteta's starting lineup during Arsenal's title-winning campaign — their first league championship in 22 years — managing only a handful of starts throughout the season.

A remarkable rise from Ituano to north London

Martinelli joined Arsenal in 2019 as an 18-year-old from Brazilian club Ituano, and his development in north London has been extraordinary. In 278 appearances for the Gunners, he has contributed 62 goals and 36 assists.

Born in Guarulhos, São Paulo, Martinelli began his footballing journey with Corinthians' futsal setup in 2010 before moving to Ituano in 2015. He attracted attention from Manchester United and Barcelona during that period, though he ultimately chose a different path.

Martinelli signed his first professional contract with Ituano in November 2017, making his senior debut months later as a substitute in a 2-1 Campeonato Paulista win over São Bento — becoming the youngest player to represent the club in the 21st century at just 16 years and nine months old.

He netted his first professional goal in September 2018 in a Copa Paulista victory over Taboão da Serra. In the 2019 Campeonato Paulista, he finished as Ituano's top scorer with six goals — including a brace in a 3-0 win against Bragantino — before Arsenal came calling that summer.
