Arsenal Target Morgan Rogers as Aston Villa Face Financial Pressure to Sell

Arsenal have identified Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers as their primary transfer target ahead of the summer window, with the Gunners looking to strengthen a midfield that was stretched thin last season.
According to The Athletic, Rogers sits at the top of Arsenal's shortlist — and Villa may have little choice but to let him go. The Birmingham club exceeded their UEFA loss limit and subsequently entered into a settlement agreement, carrying the risk of serious sanctions — including a potential ban from European competitions — should they fail to meet the agreed terms.
Financial regulations putting Villa under pressure
Aston Villa's preferred outcome is for Rogers to remain at the club next season, but offloading their standout performer could be the cleanest route to financial compliance. A sale would generate a fee believed to exceed the £116 million Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson this summer — a sum that could prove transformative for Villa's books.
For Arsenal, the appeal is clear. Manager Mikel Arteta leaned on Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi to an uncomfortable degree in the final months of last season, with injuries to Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard exposing the squad's lack of depth in central areas. Arteta's reluctance to turn to Christian Norgaard as a regular option compounded the problem further.
Alternatives being monitored
Arsenal are not limiting their search to Rogers alone. The Gunners are tracking Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, though his price tag is also expected to surpass £100 million. Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes has similarly attracted interest from the Emirates, but Newcastle have made clear that the Brazilian is not available this summer following the sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.
Away from midfield, Arsenal have moved to address their goalkeeping options, completing a free-agent deal for Illan Meslier. The summer business is only beginning, however, and securing Rogers — if Villa's financial situation compels a sale — would represent a significant statement of intent from Arteta's side as they look to challenge for the league title and compete on more fronts next season.
