Arteta's "Lighthouse" Chat Is Unlocking the Best of Declan Rice

46 minutes ago·2 min

Declan Rice has been among the most talked-about players in English football this season — described as a future England captain, one of Arsenal's greatest-ever midfielders, and, until recently, their so-called "lighthouse." Now, after a pointed conversation with manager Mikel Arteta before the campaign began, Rice is redefining what his role can look like.

Arteta's message: do more

At the start of this season, Arteta sat down with Rice and told him bluntly that the "lighthouse" label — a nickname the manager himself had coined — no longer applied. Arteta expected more from his midfielder, and Rice has delivered. The Arsenal manager has teased that he has already given Rice a new nickname, one he plans to reveal only at the end of the season.

Rice acknowledged the conversation after Arsenal's Premier League victory over Liverpool on Sunday. "The way I've started this season is the position that suits me the most," he told Match of the Day. "I've done well but he believes I can still do more and he's drilled that into me. This season I've really tried to attack that part going forward — trying to come up with assists, create chances, create moments."

Numbers that back up the praise

Rice already leads the Premier League with five assists this season, all from open play — a direct result of the positional freedom Arteta has afforded him. Since joining Arsenal in 2023, he has contributed 55 goals and assists combined, a figure that often goes underappreciated given how frequently his energy and defensive work dominate the conversation.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was unequivocal after Sunday's win. "He's one of the best midfield players Arsenal have ever had," Carragher said. "He's the best midfield player in the Premier League by a long way. It's not even a debate."

Teammate Kai Havertz credited Rice with "90%" of the winning goal against Liverpool, a tribute to the quality and energy of the pass Rice delivered to set it up.

A smarter workload

Last season, Rice played 55 games for Arsenal — a punishing schedule that, combined with a World Cup semi-final run with England and a bout of neural hamstring pain, wore heavily on him. This season, the club has managed his minutes more carefully.

The arrival of Bruno Guimaraes has allowed Rice to sit out EFL Cup fixtures, and England rested him during the most recent international break. Playing alongside Guimaraes and Myles Lewis-Skelly, Rice has been freed to occupy higher positions in midfield, while also anchoring deeper when required. He has still started every Premier League and UEFA Champions League match.

Long-term future at Arsenal

Arteta confirmed that contract talks are ongoing, stating that Rice "wants to continue here for the long term and it will be a matter of time when we resolve that." With Arsenal leading the Premier League and Rice at the centre of everything they do well, both parties appear eager to make the partnership last.
