Aston Villa have approached AC Milan over a deal to sign Portugal winger Rafael Leao, with the Birmingham club described as serious about the transfer, according to Sky in Italy.

Leao has signalled his openness to leaving Milan, and the two clubs are now in active dialogue as they attempt to finalise terms before the transfer window closes on Deadline Day, September 1.

Watkins uncertainty drives Villa's pursuit

The move comes as Aston Villa seek reinforcements in attacking areas, with considerable uncertainty hanging over striker Ollie Watkins' future at the club.

Sky Sports News has reported that Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal are in discussions to sign Watkins and have already had at least one offer turned down by Villa.

Watkins was absent from Aston Villa's matchday squad for Sunday's 4-0 home defeat to Brighton, a glaring omission that manager Unai Emery addressed with characteristic economy when speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle.
