Aston Villa collected their first Premier League point of the season, but manager Unai Emery will be left to reflect on a string of missed opportunities after a goalless draw at MKM Stadium against Hull City.

The match also marked Emery's 200th game at the helm of the club — a milestone he would have hoped to mark with victory rather than a frustrating stalemate against the newly promoted Tigers.

A bright start that faded fast

Villa showed early promise when Nicolas Jackson headed wide inside the opening two minutes, and youngster George Hemmings registered the club's first shot on target of the entire season shortly after. That early energy, however, quickly dissipated.

Hull — unbeaten so far this campaign — proved a stubborn obstacle, threatening more often than their opponents during the first half with a series of long-range attempts that kept the Villa rearguard on edge.

Glorious chances spurned after the break

The second half began with Villa at their most dangerous. A clever combination between Emi Buendia and Jackson sent John McGinn through one-on-one with goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, but the Scotland international blazed his effort high over the bar.

Three minutes later, the chance was even better. Buendia found himself unmarked inside the penalty area following an outstanding pass from Suzuki, yet the former Brentford man could not keep his shot down. It was a decisive turning point — Villa rarely threatened again.

Hull survive late drama

The hosts came close to snatching all three points. Mohamed Belloumi unleashed a stunning curling drive that rattled the crossbar in the 65th minute, before Ryan Giles found Oli McBurnie free inside the box in the dying moments. The Championship hero, with a first Premier League goal seemingly there for the taking, failed to connect cleanly and the moment passed.

At the other end, Cho squandered a presentable chance by firing straight at goalkeeper Suzuki in the 89th minute, summing up a wasteful evening for Villa.

Where both clubs stand

Despite the disappointment of failing to win, Villa's single point is enough to lift them out of the bottom three of the Premier League table. Hull, meanwhile, extend a remarkable run — three consecutive clean sheets and still unbeaten after an extraordinary start to life back in the top flight. For the reigning UEFA Europa League champions, the pressure to convert chances into goals could not be more acute.
