Aston Villa Sign Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and Left-Back Matteo Ruggeri

Aston Villa have completed the signings of goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri, bolstering their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
Suzuki, 23, arrives from Italian side Parma in a deal worth approximately £30 million. The Japan international spent two years at Parma, making 59 appearances in Serie A and helping the club finish 13th last season.
Villa regard Suzuki as their first-choice goalkeeper for the foreseeable future — a long-term number one who could hold the position for the next decade.
Martinez's future in doubt
The signing comes despite Emi Martinez remaining at Villa Park after his proposed transfer to Juventus broke down over the weekend. The two clubs could not agree on a fee, leaving Martinez's future uncertain.
Martinez had been a cornerstone of Villa's success, helping the club lift the Europa League in May and winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.
Ruggeri fills the Digne void
Ruggeri, 24, completes his move from La Liga club Atletico Madrid for £17 million, stepping in to replace Lucas Digne, who departed for European champions Paris St-Germain on 9 August.
The Italian full-back has yet to earn a senior international cap for Italy, but arrives with considerable experience. He made more than 100 appearances for Atalanta in Serie A — including their Europa League triumph in 2024 — before moving to Atletico last summer.
Both Suzuki and Ruggeri could make their Villa debuts as early as Sunday, when the club travel to Brighton for their Premier League season opener.
