Aston Villa have secured the services of Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, bringing the experienced Germany international into their midfield following a turbulent end to his time at Bayern Munich.

The 31-year-old made 312 appearances for Bayern across eight seasons, scoring 51 goals and collecting seven Bundesliga titles, the UEFA Champions League in 2020, and a FIFA Club World Cup. His contract expired in July, making him available without a transfer fee.

Why things unravelled at Bayern

Goretzka was once celebrated as Germany's finest box-to-box midfielder — a towering, versatile presence capable of operating across every position in central midfield. His former coach at Bochum, Peter Neururer, famously described him as a "once-in-a-century talent" when Goretzka was 18.

However, his influence at Bayern gradually diminished as younger players emerged and recurring injuries interrupted his momentum at critical moments. When Vincent Kompany took charge at Bayern in 2024, Goretzka was largely reduced to substitute appearances. The rise of Aleksandar Pavlovic, a homegrown Munich academy midfielder, effectively ended his prospects at the club.

He rejected a loan move to Galatasaray in 2024 and was unwilling to accept a wage reduction that would have opened doors elsewhere. Concrete talks with AC Milan ultimately came to nothing. When his contract expired, Villa moved to sign him.

What Goretzka brings to Villa

Villa are in urgent need of midfield reinforcement. Amadou Onana suffered a knee injury representing Belgium at the FIFA World Cup and will not return until next year. The club have also lost several key players this summer — defender Ezri Konsa joined Arsenal for an initial £51 million, forward Morgan Rogers moved to Chelsea for £117 million, midfielder Youri Tielemans signed for Manchester United in July, and left-back Lucas Digne returned to Paris St-Germain.

Goretzka carries 73 Germany caps and the know-how of competing at the highest level for over a decade. His ability to read the game, win aerial duels, and arrive late into the box to score remain genuine assets for Unai Emery's side.

Yet questions linger over how much he still has to offer. At the FIFA World Cup this summer, Goretzka managed just 96 minutes across three substitute appearances under Julian Nagelsmann, and there are doubts over whether new Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp will recall him to the national setup.

Villa also signed Johan Manzambi, a 20-year-old Swiss box-to-box midfielder who impressed in the Bundesliga last season. Manzambi's greater athleticism could see him adapt to the Premier League more readily than Goretzka, whose pace has visibly declined in recent years.

Villa began the Premier League season with a heavy 4-0 defeat at Brighton, underlining the urgency behind their recruitment drive. Whether Goretzka can recapture his best form — or simply provide steady cover — will shape how his Villa story unfolds.
