Australia Take on Turkey in World Cup 2026 Group D Opener in Vancouver

Australia and Turkey meet at BC Place in Vancouver on Sunday, June 14, in what promises to be one of the more intriguing Group D fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00am BST / 12:00am ET / 2:00pm AEST.
Australia's path to the tournament
The Socceroos arrived at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in fine defensive form, completing their Asian qualifying campaign without conceding a single goal. Their pre-tournament form told a different story, however — they fell 1-0 to Mexico on May 31 and drew 1-1 with Switzerland on May 6.
Mohamed Toure is expected to lead Australia's attacking line. The 22-year-old made an immediate impact at Norwich City during the second half of last season, netting 10 times in 12 appearances after joining from Danish football.
Turkey's long-awaited return
This is only Turkey's third appearance at a FIFA World Cup and their first since 2002, when Vincenzo Montella's predecessors reached the semi-finals and claimed third place. The current side arrive in excellent form — victorious in seven of their last eight matches, including pre-tournament wins over North Macedonia (4-0) and Venezuela (2-1).
Much of Turkey's creative ambition rests with Real Madrid's Arda Guler and Juventus midfielder Kenan Yildiz. Guler, 21, has fully recovered from the injury he picked up late in Real Madrid's season and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young players at the tournament.
A match to watch closely
Turkey arrive with more recent international experience at this level, which could prove decisive. FourFourTwo predict a 1-2 victory for Turkey, with Guler and Yildiz likely to be the difference-makers in what should be a closely contested encounter.
