Taiwo Awoniyi has voiced his frustration following Coventry City's 1-0 home defeat to Hull City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Liam Millar struck the decisive goal in the 82nd minute to hand Hull the three points at the CBS Arena, leaving Frank Lampard's side with nothing to show for their efforts across two games this season.

Missed chances cost Coventry

Awoniyi acknowledged that Coventry's failure to capitalise on their opportunities ultimately decided the outcome. Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis produced a brilliant close-range stop to deny the Nigeria international in the first half, and Awoniyi also headed another chance wide.

"We did quite good in terms of having the ball but unfortunately they had that great counter-attack and they took their chance. It is on us to take our chances as well," Awoniyi told Coventry's media.

He was generous in his praise for Tzolakis, who frustrated Coventry's attacking ambitions throughout the contest.

"The chances that we had were the ones that the goalkeeper saved. I wanted to put my foot in and that was one of the clear chances that we had, and I think the keeper was brilliant for them."

Awoniyi was unambiguous about where the responsibility lay: "We didn't take ours and they took theirs. It was a disappointing defeat for us. As a team, we played better and had more of the ball, but at the end the goal counts. We just have to penetrate the box more and create more chances."

Coventry remain without a Premier League win heading into their next fixture — a daunting trip to Manchester City. Lampard's side will need to sharpen their finishing considerably if they are to take anything from that encounter.
