Bafana Bafana Suffer Opening-Day Setback Against Mexico at Estadio Azteca

6 days ago·2 min

South Africa's long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup ended in disappointment on Thursday as Mexico handed them a 2-0 defeat in the opening fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at a sold-out Estadio Azteca. It was Bafana Bafana's first appearance on the global stage since 2010.

The co-hosts wasted no time imposing themselves, taking the lead in the 9th minute after a defensive error from Sphephelo Sithole. Pressured into losing the ball at the back, Sithole's mistake allowed Julián Quiñones to pounce and finish past Ronwen Williams.

Hugo Broos' side gradually found their footing and grew into the contest during the opening 45 minutes, holding more of the ball as the half wore on. Despite the improvement in possession, however, clear scoring chances proved elusive against a well-organised Mexican defensive unit, and South Africa headed into the break a goal down.

Red cards compound South Africa's troubles

Any hope of a second-half recovery was quickly extinguished when Sithole received a straight red card just four minutes after the restart, punished for hauling down Brian Gutiérrez as he bore down on goal. The dismissal left Bafana Bafana chasing the match with ten men.

Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico's advantage in the 67th minute, putting the result beyond doubt. The night grew darker still for South Africa when substitute Themba Zwane was also dismissed following a VAR review in the closing stages, reducing Broos' side to nine men.

Despite the heavy conditions — two red cards and a two-goal deficit — there were glimpses during the match that suggested South Africa can offer more as the tournament progresses.

What's next for Bafana Bafana

South Africa now face a must-respond fixture in Group A when they take on Czechia next Thursday at 16:00 GMT. A win will be essential if Bafana Bafana are to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign alive.
