Balogun, Havertz, and Ayari Lead the Golden Boot Race at World Cup 2026
Three players share the lead in the adidas Golden Boot standings at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with United States striker Folarin Balogun, Germany forward Kai Havertz, and Sweden midfielder Yasin Ayari each netting a brace in their respective opening matches.
Balogun was the first player at the tournament to score twice, striking in both instances before half-time as the United States dismantled Paraguay 4-1 in a Group D opener at Los Angeles Stadium. The 23-year-old made history in the process — becoming the first American player since 1930 to score two goals in a single World Cup match.
Havertz then delivered a commanding performance as Germany routed World Cup debutants Curaçao 7-1 in Houston. The Arsenal forward's brace formed part of a dominant Group E display that announced Germany as one of the tournament's early contenders.
Ayari completed the three-way tie at the top, contributing two goals as Sweden overwhelmed Tunisia 5-1 later that same day. The Sweden midfielder's display added to what was already a strong showing from his side.
With a large number of the 48 competing nations yet to kick off their campaigns, the Golden Boot standings are certain to shift considerably in the coming days. Several prolific strikers across the tournament remain in action and will look to join — or surpass — the current leaders.
