Barcola Says Premier League Is Less Tactical Than Ligue 1

Bradley Barcola has described the Premier League as less tactically demanding than Ligue 1, saying the move from Paris Saint-Germain to Liverpool has required a significant adjustment to a different style of football.

The French winger joined Liverpool in the summer in a deal worth up to €140 million. He has made eight appearances across all competitions since arriving at the club, including a memorable hat-trick — the first of his professional career — in a 6-3 victory over LASK.

Barcola has yet to score in the Premier League itself, though he came close in Liverpool's 2-1 win over Brentford last Saturday. Speaking ahead of that match on the TF1 programme Téléfoot, he opened up about his early impressions of English football.

"I am trying to adapt because it is very different to Paris Saint-Germain. The Premier League? It is different. I find that it is less tactical. In any case, we (PSG) had a very, very tactical manager (Luis Enrique), but I find that it is less tactical; there are fewer changes on the pitch. It is true that, with my former manager, I had to come inside, play down the wing, someone else would then take my position. Here, it is very different," Barcola told Téléfoot.

This is not the first time Barcola has drawn a contrast between the two leagues. In a separate interview with Sky Sports, he noted that Ligue 1 features far more physically imposing players.

The key difference, in his view, lies in the sheer volume of running required in the Premier League compared to Ligue 1 — a factor he says has left him suffering from cramp towards the end of matches this season. The Olympique Lyonnais academy graduate is clearly still finding his rhythm in England, but the signs of quality are already there.
