Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers on Loan From Atalanta

Ben Godfrey has completed a loan move to Rangers from Atalanta, with the Scottish club holding an option to sign the defender permanently next summer.
The 28-year-old arrives at Ibrox determined to make an impact, describing it as a "massive honour" to represent one of Scotland's biggest clubs. "I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here," Godfrey said. "I know the size of the club. I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times."
A decorated background, limited recent minutes
Godfrey built his reputation at Norwich City before a reported £20m transfer took him to Everton in 2020. Comfortable operating as a centre-back or full-back, he earned two caps for England during that period.
His move to Atalanta in 2024 has, however, yielded little playing time — just five appearances in Serie A. The Rangers loan is his fourth temporary stint in two years, following spells at Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, and Brondby. At the Danish club last season, he made 12 appearances as they finished fourth in the top flight.
McInnes backs new signing to add quality
Rangers manager Derek McInnes expressed confidence in his new recruit, pointing to Godfrey's career pedigree as a key factor in the decision. "He has competed at a very high level throughout his career," McInnes said. "He has played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him."
McInnes added that Godfrey's physical attributes make him a strong addition to the squad: "He is a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad."
With Rangers looking to challenge for honours in Scotland, Godfrey will be eager to rediscover his best form and repay the faith shown by McInnes and the Ibrox club.
