Bentancur Red Card Denies Spurs Win as Ten-Man Tottenham Earn Draw at Old Trafford

Tottenham Hotspur rescued a point at Old Trafford on Sunday, with substitute Dominic Solanke heading home a dramatic injury-time equaliser to cancel out Bryan Mbeumo's opener — moments after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for headbutting Luke Shaw in a flash of madness.

Mbeumo puts United ahead

Manchester United's best moment of the match arrived when Mbeumo turned sharply inside the Tottenham box and finished with composure to give the home side the lead. The Cameroon international had been left isolated for long stretches but showed the quality that made him such a potent force last season.

United's goalkeeper Senne Lammens had endured a nervy opening, gifting Tottenham an early scare with a mis-control before recovering to make a solid stop from Solanke. The Belgian's confidence appeared fragile throughout, and he could perhaps have done more to prevent the equaliser.

Bentancur's moment of madness

The match turned in the closing stages when Bentancur, introduced as a second-half substitute for Lucas Bergvall, reacted recklessly to a shove from Shaw. The Uruguayan's headbutt was caught clearly by match officials, and referee showed him a straight red card — leaving Tottenham to see out the remaining minutes with 10 men.

It was a decision that could have cost Spurs dearly, yet Solanke — who had earlier wasted a glorious chance to open the scoring — rose to meet a cross and nodded Tottenham level deep into added time. The captain, named as skipper in a much-changed Spurs line-up, atoned for his earlier profligacy at the crucial moment.

Standout performers

Sandro Tonali was afforded considerable freedom in the centre of the pitch and used it to dominate proceedings, his influence directly leading to the cross from which Tottenham equalised. Savio was equally dangerous on the flank, using his pace to terrorise the United backline — only a superb block from Kobbie Mainoo preventing what would have been a stunning goal.

For United, Leny Yoro impressed on his first Premier League start following his France debut, with an excellent last-ditch tackle denying Jan Paul van Hecke a clear sight of goal. Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez offered solidity in central defence, though Martinez was caught flat-footed as Solanke muscled in for the equaliser.

Bruno Fernandes continued to struggle to recapture last season's outstanding form, hesitating when a shot appeared the right option on more than one occasion. Carlos Baleba, introduced at half-time alongside Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee, injected energy and helped United press for a winner that never came.

The result leaves both clubs searching for momentum early in the season, with the drama of Old Trafford serving as a reminder that no lead is safe while Solanke is on the pitch.
