Bezos Approached to Join Amit Bhatia's Liverpool Takeover Bid

1 hour ago·2 min

Amit Bhatia, the consortium leader seeking to acquire a 30 percent stake in Liverpool FC, has approached Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as a potential co-investor in the bid, which would value the Premier League champions at more than $6 billion.

Bezos, whose net worth is estimated at around $257 billion, is the fourth-richest person in the world behind Elon Musk and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. He has not yet committed to the deal, with a source cited by Sky News cautioning that his participation was far from guaranteed.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's current owners, confirmed the approach in a statement to BBC Sport: "An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed an interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

Bhatia's background and the structure of the deal

Bhatia is the son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, and a former investment banker. The 46-year-old recently sold his own stake in QPR ahead of the move to lead the Liverpool consortium.

His proposed investment has drawn comparisons to Ineos' role at Manchester United, where Jim Ratcliffe holds a minority stake but takes responsibility for the operational running of the club on a day-to-day basis.

FSG acquired Liverpool for £300 million 16 years ago. Since then, the club have won the Premier League twice and the UEFA Champions League once, with the most recent top-flight title arriving in Arne Slot's debut season in 2024-25.

A new era at Anfield

Liverpool now enter a fresh chapter after former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was appointed head coach, succeeding Slot. The Reds finished fifth in the most recent campaign, a significant drop from their title-winning form the season prior.

Bezos has previously been linked with interest in American sports franchises — including the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders — though he did not follow through on either pursuit. His potential involvement at Liverpool would mark his first foray into European football ownership.

With Jurgen Klopp and his successor Slot both now departed, FSG face the challenge of rebuilding a title-challenging squad. How Bhatia's consortium, and any new investors it attracts, would shape that sporting strategy is expected to be central to ongoing negotiations.
