Bournemouth Claim First Premier League Win of the Season Against 10-Man Sunderland

Bournemouth secured their first Premier League victory of the season on Sunday, beating a reduced Sunderland 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium thanks to goals from Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson.

The hosts opened the scoring in the sixth minute when a poorly dealt long ball by Kevin Danso and Omar Alderete allowed Evanilson to intercept and slip a measured cross for Tavernier, who headed home from close range.

Sunderland's afternoon deteriorated sharply when Danso was shown a straight red card in the 17th minute, hauling down Evanilson as the Brazilian broke through on goal after failing to control a bouncing ball.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Sunderland held the deficit at one through the remainder of the first half. That resolve crumbled almost immediately after the restart, however.

Evanilson pounced on a careless back pass from Alderete, rounded goalkeeper Robin Roefs, and rolled the ball into an empty net to double Bournemouth's advantage in the 48th minute.

The Brazilian striker and compatriot Rayan both pushed to add to the tally, but Roefs produced several sharp saves to prevent the scoreline from growing further. A stoppage-time effort from Kluivert, latching onto a poor clearance, flashed narrowly wide of the far post in the closing moments.

Standing and what's next

The result lifts Bournemouth to 15th in the Premier League table, ending a winless run at the ideal moment for manager Marco Rose, who claims his first top-flight win since taking charge. Sunderland, meanwhile, suffer a fourth consecutive league defeat and drop to 19th. They return to action on Thursday when they face Lech Poznan in the UEFA Europa League.
