Leeds United threw away a host of gilt-edged chances at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, as Brighton and Hove Albion rallied to earn a 1-1 Premier League draw — extending the Whites' miserable record on the south coast.

It had been 17 years since Leeds last won at Brighton, and they had gone eight matches without scoring there before Jayden Bogle finally broke that drought in the 15th minute. Ao Tanaka kept the ball alive after Bart Verbruggen denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Bogle was quickest to react, tapping home from close range.

Calvert-Lewin's costly profligacy

Calvert-Lewin should have had a first-half hat-trick. As early as the 5th minute, he burst clean through only to sidefoot a one-on-one wide — a chance that replays suggested might have escaped an offside call. After Bogle's opener, he rounded Verbruggen entirely, only to see Lewis Dunk clear his effort off the line.

Tanaka then rattled the bar from the resulting corner, before having a goal correctly disallowed for offside after the interval. Anton Stach also had a close-range attempt brilliantly saved by Verbruggen, as Leeds' xG tally swelled to a remarkable 2.66 — against a single goal to show for it.

Vuskovic levels for the Seagulls

Brighton grew in belief as the misses mounted. Malick Yalcouye and Charalampos Kostoulas both went close before Luka Vuskovic — making his mark at his new club — powered home a header from Mechele De Cuyper's corner in the 71st minute to make it 1-1.

The hosts nearly snatched all three points late on. Promise David, introduced from the bench, headed over a promising cross in the 85th minute, and Pascal Gross wasted an even more straightforward chance moments later, scooping over from just four yards out.

Brighton themselves had threatened earlier through Diego Gomez and Gross, but James Trafford held firm at crucial moments. In the end, though, it was Leeds' extraordinary wastefulness that defined the afternoon — one point from a performance that deserved so much more.
