Brighton Smash Club Record with £46m Vuskovic Signing from Tottenham

Brighton & Hove Albion have shattered their club transfer record by agreeing a £46 million deal with Tottenham Hotspur for Croatia central defender Luka Vuskovic, with the fee potentially rising to £50 million through add-ons.
The agreement ends a pursuit that had already seen two Brighton bids rejected last month. Vuskovic, 19, will complete his medical once Croatia's FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign concludes — the side face Portugal in a last-32 tie in the early hours of Friday morning UK time.
A defender built in Split
Born in Split, Vuskovic came through the Hajduk academy and made history as the youngest player ever to appear in Croatia's top flight, doing so at just 16 years old. He went on to become Hajduk's youngest-ever goalscorer, underlining a talent that quickly attracted Europe's top clubs.
Vuskovic signed with Tottenham in September 2023 and officially joined the club in 2025, though he has yet to make a senior appearance for Spurs. Last season, he spent the campaign on loan at Hamburg in Germany, racking up 30 appearances and scoring six goals in the Bundesliga — a return that cemented his reputation as one of the most highly regarded young central defenders on the continent.
Replacing Van Hecke at the Amex
At Brighton, Vuskovic steps into the squad managed by Fabian Hurzeler as a direct replacement for Jan Paul van Hecke, who is heading in the opposite direction. Tottenham have agreed to pay £52 million for the Netherlands international, who had one year remaining on his Brighton contract.
The back-to-back deals between the two clubs represent a significant reshaping of both defences ahead of next season, with Brighton reinvesting the Van Hecke fee almost immediately into one of European football's most exciting young talents.
