Bubista Praises Cape Verde Discipline After Historic Draw with Spain

2 days ago·2 min

Cape Verde head coach Pedro Leitao Brito, known as Bubista, hailed his side's defensive organisation after the Blue Sharks secured a historic 0-0 draw against former FIFA World Cup champions Spain — the nation's first-ever result at the global showpiece.

The tournament debutants absorbed sustained Spanish pressure with composure and discipline, and Bubista was quick to argue that dominating possession does not equate to controlling a match.

"Teams that may not have the biggest names always try to give their best against the strongest sides. Organisation is fundamental in modern football. Of course, Spain had the ball for long periods, but controlling a game is not only about possession. There are many other aspects that determine how a match unfolds," Bubista said.

Patience and trust in the game plan

The Cape Verde bench repeatedly urged calm as the match progressed, with Bubista revealing that the team's technical staff stressed patience and belief in the structure they had put in place.

"As the game progressed, we found better conditions to launch our transitions. I told the players to stay calm, remain organised and trust that our moment would come. Towards the end, we had one or two transitions that perhaps could have been finished differently," he added.

Despite those late openings going unconverted, Bubista was generous in acknowledging the calibre of the opponent his side had just neutralised.

"We also have to recognize the quality of Spain. They are one of the best teams in the world and are always well prepared to deal with transition situations. That is why maintaining our organisation throughout the match was so important."

A milestone for Cape Verde football

The result represents a landmark moment in Cape Verde's football history — a first point at a FIFA World Cup, earned against one of the competition's most decorated nations.

The Blue Sharks' focus now turns to their second group-stage fixture against Uruguay on Monday, 22 June. Uruguay were themselves held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in their opening match, meaning both sides will be determined to claim a first victory of the tournament when they meet.
