Burn Believes Newcastle's 'Us Against the World' Mentality Will Drive Them Back to Europe

Dan Burn admits he barely recognised Newcastle United when he returned from his post-World Cup break this summer — still learning the names of new team-mates — but the club's freshly appointed captain is refusing to let that uncertainty dim his ambition.
The England defender's return coincided with one of the most significant overhauls in recent memory at St James' Park. Manager Eddie Howe departed, taking with him an era defined by Champions League qualification and an EFL Cup triumph that ended a 70-year wait for major silverware. Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon also left, while incoming head coach Matthias Jaissle arrived with half a dozen new members of staff in tow.
The new faces do not stop there. Lukas Hornicek, Ewen Jaouen, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur, and Bazoumana Toure have all joined, with right-back Amar Dedic set to follow from Benfica. Burn noted that every arrival is aged 24 or under and none has previously played in the Premier League.
Embracing the underdog
Rather than approaching the campaign with caution, Burn is channelling a familiar spirit. Speaking after Newcastle drew 1-1 with Strasbourg in their final pre-season friendly, he pointed to the siege mentality that defined some of the club's finest recent performances.
